Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a group of inspection techniques that evaluate materials and structures for defects without damaging them.

Overview

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) refers to a family of inspection methods used to examine the integrity of materials, welds and components without causing damage or taking equipment out of service. Because the asset remains usable afterwards, NDT is ideal for both quality control and ongoing condition monitoring.

The main NDT methods are ultrasonic testing, eddy current testing, magnetic particle inspection, dye penetrant testing and visual inspection. Each is suited to particular materials, defect types and access conditions.

  • Eddy Current Testing (ECT) — surface cracks in conductive materials
