What is Magnetic Particle Inspection?

Magnetic Particle Inspection reveals surface and slightly sub-surface cracks in ferromagnetic steel using magnetic fields and iron particles.

Overview

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) magnetises a steel component and applies fine iron particles. Where a crack disrupts the magnetic field, particles gather and make the defect visible to the inspector.

MPI is fast, reliable and low-cost, making it a mainstay of weld and structural steel inspection.

What MPI Detects

  • Surface-breaking cracks in steel
  • Slightly sub-surface defects
  • Weld and heat-affected-zone cracking
  • Defects in castings and forgings
