Overview

Major inspections are planned in accordance with applicable manufacturer requirements, equipment design life, competent-person recommendations and relevant requirements and guidance within the AS 2550 series. A major inspection is not a paperwork exercise. It provides an opportunity to identify hidden fatigue cracking, worn pins and structural deterioration so the equipment owner and competent person can make informed maintenance and return-to-service decisions.

What is an AS2550 10-Year Major Inspection?

The AS 2550 safe-use series provides relevant inspection and maintenance requirements and guidance for cranes and elevating work platforms. The appropriate inspection scope and timing depend on the equipment, manufacturer instructions, design life, service history and competent-person assessment.

A major inspection may require substantial dismantling so critical structural and mechanical components can be cleaned, inspected and tested. The findings and engineering assessment provide the basis for an informed return-to-service decision and any required rectification.

Complete Strip-Down & NDT Process

Our major inspection process covers every fatigue-critical and load-bearing component:

• Systematic visual inspection of the complete structure, welds and mechanical systems
• Ultrasonic testing (UT) of booms, chords and load-bearing sections for internal defects
• Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) of critical welds and ferromagnetic components
• Pin, bushing and bearing checks for wear, deformation and cracking
• Weld crack analysis at high-stress joints, pivots and boom attachment points
• Hydraulic system and structural integrity assessment with engineering sign-off

Engineering Assessment & Inspection Report

The engagement can conclude with an engineering assessment and inspection package documenting what was inspected, what was found, what was rectified and the technical basis for the recommendations provided.

The report gives equipment owners a traceable record to support maintenance planning, due diligence and discussions with their competent person, principal contractor or other relevant stakeholders.
