What is Dye Penetrant Testing?

Dye Penetrant Testing detects surface-breaking defects on any non-porous material using a penetrating dye and developer.

Overview

Dye Penetrant Testing (PT) applies a dye that seeps into surface-breaking defects. After removing the excess, a developer draws the dye out to reveal the flaw. Unlike MPI, PT works on non-magnetic materials such as aluminium and stainless steel.

It is a highly sensitive, low-cost method for finding surface cracks, porosity and leaks.

What PT Detects

  • Surface cracks on any non-porous material
  • Porosity and leak paths
  • Defects on aluminium and stainless steel
  • Fine surface discontinuities
