Major Inspection

Overview

A major inspection is a detailed equipment-specific assessment which may involve dismantling, NDT and engineering review. Its timing and extent follow the actual machine, records and applicable requirements.

NDT Australia provides a single enquiry and co-ordination point for industrial inspection through specialist partners. The proposed provider, personnel competence, method-specific qualifications where required, insurance and any separate approval requirements are checked for the actual scope before appointment; no general accreditation or acceptance guarantee is implied.

Assets & Materials

Cranes and EWPs need serial identification, configuration, manufacturer guidance, design-life information, duty history and records of repairs or modifications.

Methods & Limitations

Critical components are identified, made accessible and examined using suitable visual, surface and ultrasonic techniques. Findings, repairs and any repeat examinations are tracked through the agreed review process.

Ten years is not a universal deadline or an automatic extension of life. Missing records or inaccessible parts can prevent a conclusion. Certification, design-life review and return-to-service decisions are not automatic NDT outputs.

Planning the Inspection

Agree the inspection basis, dismantling responsibilities, replacement-parts interfaces and review hold points before booking the outage. Confirm the relevant parts of AS 2550/AS 1418 and manufacturer requirements for the machine.

Expected Reporting Deliverables

Expect a traceable examination pack, component references, dismantling/access exclusions, findings and repair/re-test history. Any responsible engineer's assessment is separately commissioned and attributed.
