Understanding Your Inspection Report

Read industrial inspection findings, coverage, criteria and limitations without mistaking an NDT result for operating approval.

Overview

A useful inspection report records what was requested, what was examined and what the results mean within the stated scope. This guide explains common sections and how to act without treating an NDT indication as an automatic engineering conclusion.

What's in a Report

  • Scope and methods used
  • Findings, with photographs and locations
  • Evaluation against the agreed criteria where supplied and applicable
  • Prioritised corrective actions
  • Any separately commissioned engineering assessment, clearly identified

Details Worth Checking

  • Asset identity, location, component or weld numbers and inspection date
  • Method, procedure, equipment or calibration information and extent of coverage
  • Surface condition, access restrictions and areas not examined
  • Indication location, type, dimensions or severity where the method supports sizing
  • Acceptance criteria, assumptions, photographs and any recommended follow-up

Findings Are Not Automatically a Disposition

An indication may be relevant, non-relevant or require further examination. The report should state the basis used and any limitation that could affect interpretation. Repair, re-test, engineering assessment, monitoring or return-to-service decisions should follow the applicable specification and responsible decision-maker's advice.

Comparing Reports Over Time

Trend repeat readings only when locations, units, technique and reference points are comparable. A difference can reflect access, surface condition, calibration, probe position or measurement uncertainty rather than a real change. Keep the original report, marked-up locations and repair records together.

Close Out the Scope and Uncertainty

Compare the delivered examination with the commissioned work pack. Unexamined locations, missing records, uncertain indications and deviations from planned coverage should remain explicit. A report with outstanding items is not the same as a whole-asset clearance.

Record who will decide on additional examination, repair, engineering assessment and operational hand-back. A certificate title, standards reference or negative test result does not remove stated exclusions or guarantee acceptance by a client, insurer or regulator.

Use the commissioning guide to define these boundaries before the next survey, and retain the preparation checklist with the asset records.
