What structural steel inspection covers

Inspection may begin with member condition, weld profile, distortion, corrosion protection, bolted or welded connections and evidence of damage. NDT is then selected for the detail: UT may examine suitable weld volumes or measure thickness, MPI may locate surface and near-surface cracking in ferromagnetic steel, and PT can suit surface-breaking defects on appropriate non-porous non-magnetic components.

The work can apply to fabricated frames, platforms, access structures, plant supports, beams, columns and other steelwork. New fabrication and existing structures create different questions: a fabrication inspection may follow a drawing and hold-point schedule, while an in-service survey may focus on corrosion, fatigue, alteration, impact or a suspected defect.

Inspection process for Sydney steelwork

The inspection plan should identify the structure, members, drawings, weld categories, access, coating condition and relevant specification. The inspector records the areas examined and any limitations such as inaccessible faces, heavy coating, poor lighting or restricted probe movement. This makes a report useful even where the full structure cannot be examined in one visit.

For existing assets, photographs and location references help compare findings during planned maintenance. If an indication is found, targeted NDT can help characterise it, but the significance of section loss, cracking or connection movement may require engineering assessment. Inspection does not itself provide an automatic structural certification or approval.

Share drawings, member or weld schedules, site access, coating condition, construction stage, suspected defect and the decision needed from the inspection. If the structure is in service, include previous reports and known loading or modification history where available. This helps distinguish a fabrication hold point from a condition survey or defect investigation.
