“Crack testing” is a commercial search term, not one single NDT method. In Sydney, the right approach may be magnetic particle, dye penetrant, eddy current or ultrasonic testing depending on the asset and the suspected flaw. NDT Australia helps define that choice before inspection.
A crack can be surface-breaking, near-surface or internal, and it may run across or along a weld, bend around a radius or follow a stress concentration. Material, geometry, defect orientation, surface condition, access and inspection objective all affect sensitivity. A method that is effective on a ferromagnetic weld may be unavailable on aluminium, while a surface technique may not answer a question about depth.
MPI is commonly considered for surface and near-surface cracking in ferromagnetic steel. PT can reveal surface-breaking defects on clean non-porous materials, including suitable non-magnetic alloys. ECT can examine conductive components for surface and near-surface responses, and UT can investigate suitable internal conditions or thickness. These methods are complementary rather than interchangeable.
A crack-testing request should describe when the indication was found, the component material, loading or service history, location, surface coating and available access. Photographs, drawings, previous reports and any repair history help determine whether the inspection should confirm a surface indication, search an area or assess a known flaw. The inspection scope is then written around the question rather than the keyword.
The technician prepares the defined area, checks equipment and reference conditions and records the scan coverage. If an indication is found, its location and character are documented for evaluation. Further NDT, removal of coating, repeat monitoring or engineering assessment may be appropriate; the NDT result alone does not guarantee fitness for service or a return-to-use decision.
