EWP components and likely inspection questions

An EWP inspection may consider boom sections, welds, pivot areas, pins, attachment details, turntable or chassis interfaces and other components identified by the manufacturer or inspection plan. Repeated loading, corrosion, impact, modification and repairs can change the risk picture. The correct scope depends on the EWP type, model, age, service history and accessible areas.

NDT can help investigate fatigue cracks or other discontinuities in suitable materials. ECT may suit selected conductive details and tight surface or near-surface crack screening; MPI can suit ferromagnetic steel parts; UT may help with suitable welds, thickness or subsurface questions. Visual inspection remains important for distortion, wear, corrosion, damage and access-related conditions.

How EWP NDT is planned

Before inspection, provide the manufacturer model, inspection instructions, component list, drawings or prior reports, known modifications and access arrangements. The technician identifies the areas and methods required, checks surface condition and records any limits to coverage. Equipment may need cleaning, coating removal, positioning or partial dismantling to make a meaningful examination possible.

The resulting report can identify the machine, areas examined, method, indications, photographs, limitations and recommended follow-up. NDT findings are one input to an EWP inspection. Manufacturer requirements, competent-person responsibilities, applicable standards and any engineering assessment must also be considered before an operational decision is made.

NDT is not an automatic EWP certification

NDT itself does not automatically certify an EWP, guarantee legal return to service or replace a complete inspection. It identifies conditions within the defined method and coverage. The equipment owner should follow the manufacturer requirements and obtain any required competent-person or engineering assessment. Where a finding is significant, operation should be managed by the responsible party while it is evaluated.
