Ultrasonic testing works on the principle of sound reflection. A transducer converts electrical energy into high-frequency sound waves and couples them into the material through a gel or liquid couplant.
As the sound travels through the material, any change in density — a crack, void or the back wall — reflects part of the energy back. The instrument measures the time and amplitude of these echoes to locate and size defects.
