How Eddy Current Works

An explanation of how eddy current testing uses electromagnetic induction to detect surface cracks.

Overview

Eddy current testing works by passing alternating current through a coil, which creates a changing magnetic field. When the coil is placed near a conductive material, it induces circulating eddy currents in the surface.

A defect such as a crack disrupts the flow of these eddy currents, changing the coil's impedance. The instrument detects this change and alerts the inspector.

The Process

  • Energise the probe coil
  • Induce eddy currents in the material
  • Detect impedance changes from defects
  • Interpret signals to locate cracks
