Difference Between Ultrasonic and Eddy Current Testing

Overview

Ultrasonic testing and eddy current testing are both powerful NDT methods, but they excel at different things. UT uses sound waves and is best for finding internal, sub-surface defects and measuring thickness. ECT uses electromagnetic induction and is best for finding surface and near-surface cracks in conductive materials.

Choosing the right method depends on the defect you're looking for, the material, and the access available.

When to Use Each

  • UT — internal flaws and thickness measurement
  • ECT — surface cracks, including through paint
  • UT — thick sections and weld volumes
  • ECT — fast screening of many components
