Ultrasonic testing can detect suitable internal and sub-surface reflectors such as cracks, lack of fusion, laminations and inclusions, and can measure wall thickness at the tested locations to monitor corrosion.

Performance depends on material, geometry, probe access, coupling, calibration and reflector orientation. A thickness survey or flaw examination does not describe areas that were not accessible or tested.
