EWP Inspection Access: Planning Examination of Pins, Booms and Hard-to-Reach Areas

Plan the configuration and access windows that let an inspector examine the nominated EWP components.

Use machine information to plan access

An EWP contains areas that are difficult to examine in its normal parked configuration. Boom overlaps, pivot assemblies, pin interfaces and covers can conceal surfaces. Access planning begins with the machine identity, configuration, manufacturer information and the nominated inspection objective.

For elevated work platform inspection, share previous reports, known findings and photographs of restricted areas. This article concerns access for a defined examination; it does not prescribe a universal annual or major-inspection interval.

Distinguish visible components from examinable surfaces

Seeing the end of a pin does not establish the condition of its concealed bearing surfaces. Seeing an outer boom weld does not expose the interior or the region beneath overlapping sections. Identify the specific surfaces needed to answer the inspection question.

The method also needs working room: probe movement, magnetisation positions, lighting or cleaning may be constrained even where the surface is visible. Ask the inspector to identify likely restrictions before the appointment so the access plan reflects the selected technique.

Coordinate positioning and dismantling safely

Machine positioning, support, isolation and dismantling need the owner's procedures and appropriately competent personnel. An NDT method does not make working beneath an unsupported component safe. Confirm who supplies access equipment, removes covers or pins, and restores the assembly.

Plan the sequence so components remain identifiable when separated. Photograph orientation and assign component references as needed. If dismantling is not included, state the resulting coverage exclusions up front rather than presenting the assembled examination as a strip-down assessment.

Prepare the nominated areas for the method

Grease, dirt, corrosion, coatings and local geometry can affect examination. Cleaning a pin assembly or boom connection should follow an agreed preparation plan. Where a known feature is under investigation, preserve its location and appearance before altering the surface.

Eddy current or magnetic particle testing may suit selected fatigue-critical regions, depending on material and technique. Other questions may need visual measurements or ultrasonic examination. Method selection is tied to the suspected damage and attainable coverage, not the equipment label alone.

Carry access limits into the final record

The report should identify the machine configuration, components examined, method and restrictions. Keep inaccessible areas separate from areas with no relevant indications. If another access window is needed, give it an identifiable scope that the maintenance team can schedule.

After examination, reassembly and any engineering or operating decision remain subject to the responsible parties and applicable requirements. A test of selected pins and boom welds does not establish every mechanical, hydraulic or control-system function. Handover should preserve both findings and the boundaries of the work.

  • Machine and component identities with previous findings.
  • Required surfaces and likely access restrictions.
  • Responsible people for positioning, support and dismantling.
  • Preparation, examination windows and reassembly arrangements.
